Here is the list of federal agencies that may be of help for older people and their families.

 

National Center on Elder Abuse (NCEA): 1-800-677-1116

Provides information and assistance with crimes against the elderly, including elder abuse and elder financial abuse. 

 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Service

Report fraud, waste or abuse, including Medicare, child support, and food stamps (CalFresh in California) and file complaints about employees and contractors. Up-to-date information about Medicare and health plans in your geographic area: 1-800-447-8477. For the Medicare Information Hotline, call 1-800-633-4227.

 

Eldercare Locator Service: 1-800-677-1116

Provides nationwide assistance for seniors, their families, and caregivers, with referrals to local agencies. 

 

U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs:  1-800-827-1000

Provides Benefits and Services to U.S. veterans, including dependents and survivors. 

 

U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC): 1-202-326-2222

Provides consumer protection on: loans, credit cards, identity theft, telemarketing, funeral homes and cemeteries.

 

FTC Identity Theft Hotline

This is the federal government’s one-stop resource for identity theft victims. Helps identity theft victims resolve financial and other problems and file complaints.

Register Phone numbers to reduce telemarketing.

 

U.S Internal Revenue Service (IRS): 1-800-829-0433

Provides information on legitimate charities, tax related fraud schemes, fraudulent federal tax returns, and other information. 

 

IRS Tax Fraud Activity Reporting: 1-800-829-0433

Provides information and instruction for reporting federal tax fraud activity. 

 

U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Inspection Services: 1-877-876-2455

Provides help in reporting if your mail was stolen, your mailing address was fraudulently changed, or if the U.S. mail was used in an identity theft scheme. 

 

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC): 1-800-732-0330

Licenses & Regulates: national securities exchanges, investment companies, investment advisors managing over $100 million in client assets. 

 

U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA): 1-800-772-1213 or TTY 1-800-325-0778

Provides economic protection for U.S. citizens, Social Security information, and fraud prevention related to Social Security. 

 

SSA Office of the Inspector General, Fraud Reporting: 1-800-269-0271

Provides ways to report If you suspect someone of committing fraud, waste, or abuse against Social Security.
